Keyboard Setup for “Little Shop”

June 13, 2013

I finished a run of Little Shop of Horrors at Lawrence High School last weekend. It was my first time playing this show, and I’m absolutely in love with the score right now. We used the 2003 Danny Troob orchestration. The Keyboard 1 book was an absolute blast to play, and I hope I get to do this show again in the future. Here are two photos of our keyboard rigs!

Little Shop of Horrors Keyboard 1

Keyboard 1 used a Yamaha CP33 controlling Apple MainStage. I had planned on using Ivory II for piano sounds, but decided against it after finding out the venue is wired in mono. Instead, I used a custom PianoTeq preset I created in mono mode. It sounded much better than running Ivory II in mono. I read music off my iPad. It felt really weird at first, but I got used to it after a few songs. I got the AirTurn BT-105 to turn pages with a footswitch. I had trouble with the stock pedal provided by AirTurn, so I hooked up a BOSS FS-5U to the unit.

Little Shop of Horrors Keyboard 2

Keyboard 2 used a Korg M50 controlling Apple MainStage. I’ve never played or used an M50 before. I’m not a huge fan of the action or the user interface, but I do like how it has three pedal inputs. I configured them to send sustain, volume, and patch change to MainStage.
