A word of warning – this rant is political in nature, so please stop reading now if you’re not into politics. Over the past six months, I’ve lost a few friends and acquaintances to political polarization. People who I once respected and thought were reasonable are now on Facebook 24/7 (literally) acting as political puppets. When I was growing up, my parents, teachers, and community leaders placed a heavy emphasis on listening to the other side. The ability to respect individual thought was also a character trait that was held in high esteem.
In 2020, everything has completely shifted 180 degrees. Some people call it being “woke”. I call it the willful consumption of propaganda. What people (liberals from my point of view) don’t realize is that platforms like Facebook and Twitter show you what you want to see. If you constantly express radical liberal thoughts like “Joe Biden is already the President-Elect on November 14, 2020 (he’s not)”, Facebook understands that and it will show you related content from other like-minded individuals. That’s precisely why platforms like Facebook are so bad for “getting the word out” – it’s a digital echo chamber and nothing more.
Spending an inordinate amount of time in these echo chambers is changing people. There’s no longer a grounded sense of reality in America. Reality is whatever your echo chamber deems it to be, and this is an extremely dangerous path to go down. Friendships are being severed due to political disagreements, even though we were raised to be reasonable and intelligent people. Facts are being replaced by the narratives of individual political tribes.
As someone observing from outside the USA, this propagation of false realities really hit a peak this past week. Scrolling through my Facebook feed, I see hundreds of people pushing the narrative that Joe Biden is the President-Elect. Politics aside, that’s literally not true. The President-Elect is not determined until after individual states have certified votes. Since that hasn’t happened yet, Joe Biden is not the President-Elect at this time. This is a basic step-by-step process that any first grader can grasp. Yet, there are millions of liberals losing their minds over why conservatives won’t refer to Biden as the President-Elect.
As humans, we’ve already lost. I’m not stupid. I completely understand what’s going on here. Liberals are willing to overlook the process to get what they want. They’re willing to overlook the fact that there is a process behind choosing a President of the United States. Worst of all, they think it’s okay to overlook the process because Donald Trump is a mean orange fascist dictator (he isn’t a fascist dictator – this is a fact) and we need to expel fascism from America in the name of democracy (there is no fascism in America).
It’s a three step process.
- Assign a negative word to your enemy (e.g. Donald Trump is a fascist).
- Create a narrative about how we need to destroy that enemy ASAP.
- Execute the narrative at all costs.
So, now we’re at Step 3. Liberals are willing to bypass the election process instead of letting it play out. To justify the intention behind the false claims of Joe Biden being the President-Elect, liberals have created the narrative that Trump is a fascist. A question – would there even have been an election if Trump was a fascist? Don’t answer that. It’s a rhetorical question.
It’s sad to me that I lost friends because I shared a Ben Shapiro article on social media. It’s sad to me that I’m apparently a white supremacist because I didn’t attend BLM protests during my vacation to the USA. Most of all, it’s sad that we have devolved to being political puppets for people we don’t know and love.
Think about this. If you’re my age now, you’ll probably be lying on your death bed in 60-80 years. Are you going to be proud of yourself for spending 4+ years of your life spreading hate about an orange dictator (who isn’t a dictator) while undermining the very definition of democracy by willing to overlook the set rules of the democratic election process because your political tribe thinks it’s somehow democratic to do so?
If the answer to that question is “yes”, then you’re a moron – sorry.
If your answer is “no”, then snap out of it. Learn to understand and appreciate reality for what it actually is, and not what your tribe deems it to be. Stop spending all your time on Facebook shouting into an echo chamber. You’re not going to change anyone’s mind anyway because Facebook prioritizes money-generating polarization over absolute truth. In other words, politicians are using you as their puppets, while Facebook is milking you for your attention (that’s what they sell) and making billions of dollars off of it.
If you’re wondering what “side” I’m on, I can only say “it doesn’t matter”. I respect people who respect objective reality. I don’t respect people who propagate subjective realities. I suggest you do the same for the sake of all humans.
Stop being a puppet, and take control of your life.
