Remember That Time We Saw Aliens?

I was browsing Reddit earlier today, and came across this thread about alien encounters. I’m a firm believer in extraterrestrial life. The universe is mind-numbingly huge, and the idea of intelligent life outside Earth isn’t crazy to me. Anyway, this thread was very interesting to me because I experienced something very similar to a few of the commenters.

Here’s the story.

Hokkaido - June 2016

Two days before our scheduled departure from Osaka, Ben misplaced his passport. We were able to schedule an emergency appointment at the United States Consulate in Osaka to get a new passport, but we ended up missing our flight up north Hokkaido. Last minute flights to CTS from KIX were prohibitively expensive, so we ended up taking the Shinkansen to Tokyo after the passport appointment. Flights from NRT were substantially cheaper, so I used some extra AsiaMiles to book a one night stay at Hilton Narita, and we flew to CTS the following afternoon.

Osaka - June 2016

Two weeks ago, we were in Tokyo and now we’re in Osaka. We flew from Hong Kong to Osaka on Hong Kong Express, and it was a terrible flight. While sitting on the ground at HKG due to worsening weather conditions, the pilot informed us there would be a two hour wait before departure. Fortunately, we were able to takeoff about an hour later. Unfortunately, the rest of the flight was the most turbulent 3.5 hours I’ve ever experienced.

How to Host & Stream Music on DropBox

In a previous post, I explained why hosting your music portfolio on SoundClound isn’t a good idea. While I personally use Amazon’s S3 to host audio files for my portfolio, DropBox is also a great (free) option. If you’re hosting music samples for a portfolio, you’ll probably want to use 320kbps MP3. I recommend staying away from uncompressed WAV and AIFF because DropBox may ban your account if you receive a traffic spike.

Why You Shouldn’t Use SoundCloud to Host a Music Portfolio

A music portfolio is all about wellharing your creations with the world. Whether it’s to attract potential employers or just for fun, a portfolio should always represent your music at its best. In addition to a nice looking website, you also need to think about sound quality. I’ve seen a lot of people use SoundCloud to host their music portfolio. This is something you should never do. Why? Because SoundCloud encodes all your music to 128kbps MP3 for streaming.

How to Build Your First Home Recording Studio

Twenty years ago, building an affordable home studio was pretty much an impossible task. Since then, there has been lots of innovation in the music recording technology industry, and building your own personal home recording studio is no longer a pipe dream. Astronomically priced gear still exists, but building a decent home studio for $1,000 or less is completely doable. Before I go into more detail, here’s a list of things you’ll need for a basic studio setup.
